Bill's Storytelling Workshops & Commissions

1. "Stories with Music - Making the Integration"

Length: from 1 to 4 hours, depending on available time.
Beneficiaries: All storytellers, beginning to advanced, who want to accompany their stories with music.

Many people have started to add music to their stories. They play hand-held percussion instruments such as the tambourine, claves, bells, chimes, washboard, bongos or congas, as well as the guitar, banjo, piano, ukulele, boom box, and many others.

Music adds dimension and depth to a story. Music moves the story along, propels it, adds tension and release, underscores emotions, makes the audience listen, and in general adds to the entertainment value of the story.

In this workshop we will look at the principles and practices of adding music to our stories: the when, where, why, how and how much. Once you start adding music to your stories, you may never go back to a music-less tell. This is a relaxing and enjoyable workshop that entertains as it teaches.

"Enjoyed speaker very much - very articulate and good teacher. "
"Interesting learning about his experiences as musician and storyteller."
"He was vibrant! Sharing info + energy."
"Entertaining and educational."

2. The 10 Commandments of the Personal Story

Length: from 1 to 4 hours, depending on available time.
Beneficiaries: All storytellers, from beginning to advanced, who tell or want to tell personal -- as opposed to traditional -- stories.

As the storytelling revival in America enters its second quarter-century, many people have noticed a swing towards the personal story - a story by an individual about a personal experience that he or she has allegedly lived. Although some in the storytelling community are reticent about this swing, others recognize the inevitability of this trend. As storyteller Bob Jenkins said: "In the long run, Americas contribution to the world storytelling revival movement will be seen to be the personal story."

Everyone has a story to tell. And most people have at least one personal story a day that they have lived and wish to share. We share our personal stories with our friends all the time.

There are ten commandments for creating and telling a personal story which should be known by all. They are simple, they are humorous and they work. This is a fun and funny workshop about the world of the personal story.

"Fun."
"A fresh look at oral construction."
"Nice and tight. Lots of great suggestions."
"It was great!"
"Insightful consideration of the creative process."
" Very comfortable atmosphere. I felt that I could ask Bill any question. I will be back next year!!"
